Fridays Are Good Personal Days

One of the challenges of running a business out of your home is working around personal errands and appointments.

Today, I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon to follow up on a fracture-reduction surgery I had a couple weeks ago on my wrist, relating to that motorcycle accident. We left home at 11:00am. Since my right arm is immobilized, Lisa had to drive me.

But I've also been seeing my primary doctor for other issues surrounding the accident as well, and had to visit the laboratory so that they could take some specimens.

Once that was done, we both got lunch at a local restaurant.

I didn't get back home until around 4:00pm.

In other words, taking care of personal matters took five hours out of my work day.

Based on all the writing, blogging, webmastering, e-mailing, and the other facets of running a business, I need every one of those five hours. To make a long story short, I didn't get to do all the things that I would have normally done.

So, is there is a lesson to be learned here?

Well I can tell you one thing. If you know about personal matters that you'll have to take care of, schedule them on a Friday. Friday always seem to be slow days in terms of volume of work to be done. I still didn't get everything done that I normally do, but because it was a Friday today, there wasn't a whole lot to check up on.

I normally check a long list of media sources to get my daily blogging material. Press releases are sparse on Fridays. So are the market intelligence reports that I subscribe to. The volume of e-mails being sent to me is smaller on Fridays also. Not only that, but people often work shorter hours on Fridays in an attempt to lengthen their weekend. Thus, if I wanted to talk business with someone, it's harder to nail them down on a Friday.

So if you can help it, schedule your personal errands on Fridays.
